In 1947, Southern Railways commissioned artist Helen McKie to paint two images of the station , one in wartime and one in peacetime to mark the Centenary of the first station on this site. This is the peacetime edition.
This is a charming and beautiful piece which has so much detail which may pass you by at first glance. The peacetime version seems to be a more joyous version now that war is over people are free to go about their normal daily lives. There is plenty of hustle and bustle in this lively scene - a smiling child eagerly awaits her possible holiday with a bucket and spade, a separated couple warmly embrace at their reunion, a well dressed couple are perhaps going to the theatre, a happy porter walks by with a suitcase on his shoulder, a troop of Grenadier guards are marching ... A truly atmospheric painting where you can easily feel drawn in and part of it!
This is a highly sought-after work and is sure to form an interesting conversation piece to any living room. This piece looks stunning mounted as shown in our 20" x 16" framed edition.
