Drawn by Ernest Clegg this superb pictorial map of Norfolk was completed just after World War Two and shows Norfolk's contribution to the war effort. Norfolk was a key producer of vital foods stuffs during the war with crops such as barley, sugar beet, wheat and fruit as Britain thwarted the German blockade. Indeed Norfolk had the highest arable acreage of any county during the war. Women played a key role in agriculture by joining the Women's Land Army whilst the men were away fighting. Over 100,000 acres were also given over for airbases for the RAF and USAF.
The map is surrounded by numerous vignettes of the City of Norwich, Sandringham, crest of Kings Lynn and others. An extract from Churchill's most famous World War Two speech is also quoted "We shall fight them on the beaches..." This is a true piece of history captured in map form.
