This wonderfully detailed 1851 map created by John Tallis shows the vibrant city of Dublin. Situated on the banks of the River Liffey, Dublin was an administrative centre adorned with beautiful architecture and of course St Patrick's Cathedral. The Industrial Revolution didn't take hold as much in the south of Ireland and the pace was a little slower but the Guinness brewery, St James Gate (est 1759) and the Jameson Distillery, Bow St (est 1780) were significant employers in the 1850s. Put your feet up and take an imaginary stroll through historic Dublin's fair city!
