This classic piece was produced by John Speed the best known mapmaker of the Stuart period. It is a wonderful example of a decorative county map that was produced over 400 years since. This is an antique reproduction of the original hand coloured map and therefore each original map is in itself unique.
Featured in beautifully illustrated vignettes are the Palace of Richmond and Nonsuch Palace.
Richmond palace was commissioned by Henry VII and was completed in 1501. It was a favourite residence of Queen Elizabeth who incidentally died there in 1603.
Nonsuch Palace was commissioned by Henry VIII. Situated on the boundaries of Epsom and Ewell it stood from 1538 til 1683. It became the property of Barbara, a mistress of Charles II, in 1670. She had the palace demolished in 1682-3 and realised the profits to pay off a gambling debt!
Place name spellings are in Olde Worlde Englyshe and it is interesting note these differences!
