Travel with us back in time to the beautiful city of Venice famed for its canals and being Queen of the Adriatic. This superb map of Venice was created by Georg Braun and Frans Hogenberg showing Venice how it would have looked in the mid Renaissance period. The map appeared in the famed Civitates Orbis Terrarum - the Cities of the World - which was a cartographical masterpiece featuring 546 maps.
Venice played an undisputed leading role in trade between East and West for centuries due to its geographical position. In the 15th/16th centuries, the city on the lagoon, with a population of some 150,000, also experienced a flowering of the arts. The 400 bridges over its 180 canals include the famous Rialto (150), the only bridge over the Grand Canal at that time.
This is a highly sought-after work and is sure to form an interesting conversation piece to any living room. This piece looks stunning mounted as shown in our 20" x 16" framed edition.
