Stunning Agas 1560 LONDON Map by Wm MAITLAND 1738 Elizabethan London

This fascinating early modern London Map was produced by William Maitland in his 1738 work a History of London. The map shows London as it looked in 1560 and is likely inspired by a previous work entitled 'Civitas Londinium' by Ralph Agas. Unfortunately no examples of Agas' work still survive. The original Agas map measured six foot in length and two foot wide. Maitland's version drastically reduced the size of the original and produced a full colour version. 

Maitland's gorgeous map shows Elizabethan London in great detail. It includes a key identifying over 80 place names and 2 coats of arms. The map names and identifies a number of streets and important place names. A bull and bear baiting pit are shown on the south bank. The Globe Theatre and the City Walls are also shown along with the Tower of London.
