A wonderful piece commissioned to commemorate World War II and to mark the importance that agriculture, industry and the role that women played on the home front in securing that victory. The proud towns and cities of Sussex - Chichester, Eastbourne, Lewes, Hastings and many others. A Canadian emblem signifies the important defensive role that Canadian troops, especially the 1st Army, played around the Sussex coast. The Canadians manned the coastal defences at Newhaven and Worthing and indeed the whole of Sussex was used as a training ground as the war shifted in preparation for D Day.
The map details towns, larger villages, rivers and the industrial and agricultural products produced within those areas. It gives special mention to the role of the Women's Institute and the importance of British farms along with excerpts of Winston Churchill's speeches.
