Old Norwich Map 1581 by Braun - Nordovicum Norwich Castle Cathedral

Published in 1575 by Georg Braun and Frans Hogenberg, this is one of the first printed maps of Norwich - or Nordovicum as it was known then. This map was first published in Civitates Orbis Terrarum - the Cities of the World - which was a cartographical masterpiece featuring 546 maps.

This fine view of Norwich is based on William Cuningham's plan of 1558. Viewed from the northwest its situation on a bend in the River Wensum is shown surrounded by verdant farms and pastures. The Norman Cathedral of the Holy and Undivided Trinity is at the heart of the city and to the right, on top of a small hill, is the castle.

A key at lower left describes 21 sites including 11 gates into the city. The arms of England and the city arms flank the title cartouche.

This rare work is highly sought-after work and is sure to form an interesting conversation piece to any living room. This piece looks stunning mounted as shown in either our A2 or 20x16 inch framed editions.
