This is the first edition of Beck's famous map of the London Underground railways, the first such map to use an entirely schematic and largely non geographical design for the railway system. This map is considered to be a landmark of twentieth century information design. Beck based this map on the circuit diagrams he drew in his day job as an engineer. This method allowed him to reduce the Tube network down to a neat diagram of coloured and criss-crossing lines.

Beck's underground network map was initially rejected as it was thought to be too radical. However, a trial wit the public showed it to be a success with the general public. The rest is history!
