Sir Roderick Murchison (director-general of the British Geological Survey) and his esteemed colleague Archibald Geike jointly produced 'The First Sketch of a New Geological Map of Scotland'. This highly detailed study (the first of its kind) identified eighteen different variations of rock types on which the great country of Scotland is seated. The map is not only comprehensive it is also pleasing to the eye with its crisp fonts and fitting use of colour. The Shetlands, Orkneys and the Western Isles are all included.
